About the artwork

There is a restlessness in Igor Shulman’s work that is hard to look away from. In The Tide, Shulman takes the familiar image of a figure on a shoreline and turns it into something cinematic—almost like a frame from a film where the story is already in motion. It doesn't feel like a static landscape; it feels like a caught moment.

The most striking aspect here is the color palette. Shulman has stepped away from the literal blues of the ocean, opting instead for a world drenched in glowing magentas, violets, and warm pinks. This choice transforms the beach into a surreal, hazy space that feels more like a memory than a specific location. In the center of this color field, a solitary figure in a dark, heavy coat is captured mid-stride, leaping or running as the tide pulls back across the wet sand.

Executed in oil on canvas, the piece has a physical weight to it. The 80×80 cm square format provides a perfect balance, allowing the expansive horizon to feel both vast and contained. It’s a piece about that brief second of total freedom—or perhaps escape—that only a wide-open coast can offer.
