A black pug sits squarely facing us, its tongue out and its dark coat shot through with cool blue highlights where the light hits. Around its neck hangs a chunky gold chain, the one clear flash of bling against the soft lilac background. Shulman plays the dog's solemn, slightly grumpy expression off the swagger of that chain, and the result is gently comic. Oil on canvas, 2022, a 100 by 100 centimetre square.
