A man has slumped face-down onto a table, his head buried in his arms over an open newspaper, a wide-brimmed hat hiding most of his face. The whole scene is brown and warm grey, with a row of empty beer bottles standing behind him and a couple more toppled in front. The story tells itself.

Shulman paints the bottles in soft, glowing browns against a pale wall, and the wooden tabletop is laid in with long horizontal strokes. The newspaper text reads back-to-front, a sign the image was painted from a mirrored source. There is real humour and a little pity in it.
