Orpheus plays his violin not to wild beasts but to a large white hen. Roman Zuzuk's musician, in a purple smock and grey trousers, leans forward with his instrument while the bird, red-combed and serious, leans in to listen. They stand on a strip of green at the foot of a great golden field, with a low line of round trees and a couple of houses along the top.
This is one of the bigger pieces here, an oil on canvas from 2001, nearly square at 78 by 80 centimetres. The paint is built up thick, especially in that wall of ripe yellow field, and the calm between man and bird carries the whole quiet scene.
