About the artwork

Golden Fishes is a large oil on canvas, 90 by 70 centimetres, painted by Roman Zuzuk in 2001. Two big pale fish hang in the warm ochre sky near the top, nose to nose, their eyes wide and their mouths a touch of red, more like winged creatures than anything swimming.

Below them sits a small town of cream houses with red roofs and a couple of domed churches, drawn loosely as if half remembered. Along the bottom a line of figures in red tunics and green trousers walks across the foreground, several with their arms thrown up.

The whole picture stays in a narrow range of golds, ochres and dusty reds, the paint thin and rubbed so the ground shows through. It has the feel of a procession under a sky full of good omens.
