About the artwork

Saffron is a close-up of crocus blooms by Helena Tener, with one large flower opening towards us and a second turned away to the left. The petals are a soft lilac, deepening to violet where they curl into shadow, and at the heart of each flower sit the bright orange-red stigmas and a spray of yellow stamens. Slim green leaves push up between the stems, and there is a hint of a third, warmer bloom drifting out of focus at the top. It is painted in acrylic on silk, which gives the petals their slightly glowing, washed quality against the pale grey-lavender ground. Measuring 115 by 95 centimetres, dated 2015.
