About the artwork

This watercolour by Roman Zuzuk is a quiet dream of a room. A man has laid his head down on a blue-draped table and gone still, his arms folded under him, his face turned up with a small smile. A second face seems to grow from his shoulder, as faces do in dreams, so you are not quite sure where one figure ends and the next begins.

The room around him keeps adding things. A slim yellow goat with curved horns walks in along the table's edge. On the blue cloth sit a green bottle and a little glass, and painted onto the cloth are a white bird and a small brown animal facing each other. A cactus in a speckled pot stands at the right, one red flower open at its top.

Above it all hangs a framed picture of a reclining nude woman on a warm yellow ground, her body stretched the full width of the frame. The walls are olive-brown, the floor a deep earthy red, and the man sits on a small green stool.

When I sleep is painted in watercolour, dated 2024 and signed at the lower right, and measures 58 by 47 centimetres. Nothing in it is quite logical, which is exactly the point.
