A steam locomotive bears down head-on, its dark blue body almost black against the sky, a thick column of smoke climbing straight up from the funnel. Shulman paints the engine bold and frontal, the round boiler door and headlamp like a face, the cowcatcher and buffers heavy at the bottom.
The sky is all cool blues, while the embankments either side flash with warm yellow and the track in front breaks into orange and pink touches. The power of steam is oil on canvas from 2017, upright at 60 by 80 centimetres, painted with broad, energetic strokes.
