Two moustached men race on a tandem bicycle, both bent low over the bars, legs pumping. They wear old-fashioned cycling kit, and the whole picture has the washed-out look of an early photograph, all pale grey and faint brown with the colour almost drained away.

Shulman keeps the spokes and frame as quick, sketchy lines and lets the riders and machine sit lightly on an empty grey ground. The Invincible Tandem is oil on canvas, a wide 100 by 75 centimetres, from 2022.
