About the artwork

The City of a Hundred Spires looks out over the rooftops of Prague, packed edge to edge with towers, domes and chimneys. Alexey Slusar painted it in oil on canvas in 2025, a very tall, narrow canvas at 140 by 50 centimetres that stacks the city upward.

Dark slate and copper roofs and several onion-shaped cupolas rise in the lower and middle ground, with a tower carrying a clock face among them. Behind, the ochre and cream walls of the older buildings catch the warm light, and a row of thin spires breaks the skyline at the top.

The paint is built up thickly across the whole surface, every roof and turret given its own facet, so the eye climbs from the blue domes at the bottom up through the warm jumble of the city. It reads as a dense, sunlit tangle of old Prague seen from above.
