A couple sits close together on a bench, leaning into each other for a kiss. The woman in a grey coat rests her arm around the man in a tan jacket, and a dark bag sits on the bench beside them. Behind, the city is reduced to blurred greys and browns with one warm streak of light, and a small distant figure stands off to the left.
Shulman keeps the two of them sharp while everything around dissolves, so the moment feels private inside a busy place. Romance is oil on canvas, a wide 70 by 50 centimetres, painted in 2017.
