Everything in this picture is in motion. A figure strides forward through a haze of horizontal streaks, the body smeared sideways as if caught at speed, with a warm brown form, perhaps a coat or bag, swung out from it. The surface is scored with long scratched lines that pull the whole image into blurred bands of violet, cream and cool blue.
Shulman lets the figure dissolve almost completely, keeping only enough to read as a person walking. Return to Orbit is oil on canvas, 65 by 100 centimetres, from 2023, abstract and restless.
