Michael Slutsker caught a grey, rainy afternoon on Prague's Celetná Street in this oil on canvas from 2025. The cobbles glisten under the drizzle and throw back soft reflections of the tall old houses, with their arched windows and ornate fronts blurred a little by the damp air.

A handful of people move down the middle of the street under umbrellas, one figure in warm red standing out against the muted greys and cool blues that fill most of the scene. At the far end the Old Town Hall tower rises into the mist, its clock face just legible.

Warm light leaks from a few shop windows on either side, the only real colour against the wet stone, and it pulls your eye straight down the street into the haze. At 75 by 60 centimetres, it is less a postcard of the old town than a plain, slightly miserable afternoon there, which is exactly what makes it work.
