An old man in round glasses tucks into a slice of cream-filled roulade, fork raised, his face creased with anticipation. He has a grey beard, a coloured scarf knotted at his throat over a dark coat, and he balances the little plate of cake topped with berries in his other hand. The background is a flat, dark olive-green that throws all the light onto his face and the dessert. Slutsker keeps the brushwork thick and expressive, the whole thing affectionate and faintly comic. Oil on canvas, upright at 45 by 60 centimetres, from 2025.
