A standing nude seen from behind fills this tall canvas, her dark hair tied back, her body painted against a vivid scarlet ground. The red is laid on thickly and scratched back in places, so the wall behind her reads as worn and textured rather than flat.

Shulman models the back, hips and legs in cool violets and warm flesh tones, letting the red reflect into the skin at the edges. Nude on red is oil on canvas from 2016, 50 by 100 centimetres, direct and confidently brushed.
