A close portrait of a very old man with a long white beard and matching wild white hair, wearing round spectacles and a dark cap, with a deep red robe over his shoulders. He cradles a small round metal casket in one hand and lifts the other finger to it, leaning in with a soft, absorbed smile as if appraising something precious inside. Slutsker builds the face and beard out of thick, broken paint against a warm brown ground, with a faint gold glow at the upper right. The title names him as the merchant Mordechai Maisel. Oil on canvas, 60 by 50 centimetres, painted in 2022.
