A young man crouches forward, one boot planted and his hands busy with the laces, dressed in a worn olive jacket and jeans. Gathered at his feet, looking up at him, are five cats, a brown tabby, a white one, and several greys, all sitting patiently as if waiting their turn. Shulman floats the group against an almost empty white background over a strip of brown floor, which makes the little crowd of helpers feel both ordinary and faintly absurd. Oil on canvas, 2022, 95 by 100 centimetres.
