A close-up portrait of an older man with a thick reddish-brown beard and a small dark skullcap, set against a soft green ground. He leans on his folded arms and wags a finger, eyes half-shut and mouth curling into a knowing, slightly mischievous smile, as if mid-scolding or mid-joke. Slutsker piles the paint on heavily around the face and hand, all ridges and broken light, which gives the skin and beard a real liveliness. The title, Don't be Stupid, fits the expression exactly. Oil on canvas, a square 45 by 45 centimetres, from 2019.
