Michael Slutsker painted Celetná Street in central Prague just after the rain, and it is the wet weather that makes the whole picture work. This is an oil on canvas from 2026, upright and fairly large at 55 by 75 centimetres.

The view looks down the narrow street towards a Gothic tower with a tall, slate-blue spire, standing over a pointed stone archway that the street passes under. On the right, a heavily decorated Baroque facade fills most of that side of the canvas. Its stonework is carved with figures and ornament, the kind of detail you only really notice when you stop and look up. The buildings on the left are plainer and paler, and they lean the eye back towards the tower.

The rain has stopped, but the cobblestones are still soaked. Slutsker uses that to his advantage: the whole street surface turns into a soft mirror, throwing back the grey of the sky, the dark shape of a parked car on the left, and the cool light caught between the buildings. A few small figures move along the pavement, some with umbrellas still up, painted in just a stroke or two each. There is a hanging street lamp and the faint suggestion of shopfronts.

The palette is mostly silver, grey and stone, with the blue of the spire as the one cooler note that pulls the distance together. The paint is applied thickly and quickly, with a palette knife in places, so up close the surface is all broken texture and from a step back it settles into a convincing, atmospheric street.

What stays with you is the mood rather than the monument. It is not a postcard view of Prague but an ordinary, slightly grey morning in the old town, the streets washed clean and almost empty, told in confident, loaded brushwork.
