A girl sits at the end of a wooden pier with her bare feet hanging just above the water, and shafts of sunlight pour down through the branches above her. Alexey Slusar painted At the Lake in 2020, oil on canvas, upright at 90 by 72 centimetres.
She is turned away from us in profile, in a light flowered dress, a few small flowers tucked into her loose hair. The trees overhead are heavy with pale yellow blossom, and the low light catches the edge of her hair and shoulders. Below, the dark green water holds white lilies and a soft, broken reflection of the figure on the planks.
Most of the canvas is given over to that fall of light and the cool, shadowy water, which keeps the mood calm and a little dreamy. The handling is loose around the foliage and water, tighter on the girl herself, so the eye settles on her quiet pose.
