About the artwork

Three girls spend a summer afternoon in a meadow full of daisies and red poppies. One stands and holds up a freshly picked flower, another lies on her stomach reading a book, and a third sits beside her in a white sun hat. Behind them, on the right, a weathered timber cottage with a dark plank wall and a grey roof sits at the edge of the field, and the land falls away to a band of water and low blue hills under a soft summer sky.

Michael Slutsker built the whole foreground out of thick, broken dabs of paint, so the flowers read as flecks of white, orange and red rather than tidy blooms. It is a wide canvas, 120 by 65 centimetres, oil on canvas from 2020, and the long format gives the meadow plenty of room to spread. The mood is unhurried and a little nostalgic, the kind of childhood afternoon that runs on no particular schedule.
