A soldier in a dark uniform and side cap walks forward, surrounded by three small girls in dark coats who reach up for his hands. One girl on the left looks up at him beaming, two more hold on at his sides, and a slim grey dog trots along behind his legs. Shulman sets the figures against a flat lilac-pink ground that has been scraped and scuffed, so nothing distracts from the homecoming itself. The mood is plain and warm rather than sentimental. Painted in oil on canvas in 2017, a wide format at 120 by 90 centimetres.
