Michael Slutsker's A Good Buy is a warm, good-humoured portrait of an old farmer who has clearly got what he came for. He holds a wicker basket against his chest, and perched on it is a splendid rooster with a red comb and dark green tail feathers. The man wears a flat cap and a soft grey beard, and his face is creased into a contented half-smile. Behind him the countryside opens up, a small cottage and green fields under a light sky. Painted in oil, with loose, confident brushwork that gives the rooster its shine.
